So…the burning question…what is the deal with Jesse Mecham’s You Need a Budget software? Is it worth it? Does it actually work? I hope this review will answer any questions you have.

So all that being said (or written, I suppose…) Here’s my full review of Jesse Mecham’s You Need A Budget software.

What’s Good About You Need A Budget?
What would a good review be if I didn’t mention some of the benefits of YNAB? Don’t worry, I cover both sides and I will mention some downsides below.
1. You Need A Budget Restores Your Hope.
Let’s be honest, finances can be depressing. If you’re like me, you began looking for budgeting software because you felt like you needed to get more control over your finances. Many budgeting solutions feel restrictive. Jesse’s system and YNAB software make you feel like you’re in the driver’s seat with your finances, not in the backseat in handcuffs.
The YNAB system is a refreshing way to look at budgeting. Rather than being tied to a number you picked at the beginning of the month for a certain category, you can (and are encouraged to) make wise adjustments based on new information and changing priorities.
Add to this the YNAB software and you are able to implement this methodology quickly and easily. No filling out 20 sheets of papers for a budget, a debt snowball and who knows what else! No carrying around 10 envelopes with cash in them, trying to keep everything straight. Just a simple, intuitive software program.
2. YNAB Won’t Take Over Your Life.
You will not be beholden to your budget…and you won’t have to have your face glued to your phone or computer for countless hours to make it work.
One of the things I love about YNAB is Jesse says over and over again…if you are constantly staring at your budget your family and friends are going to start thinking you’re weird!

Once you get everything set up, the YNAB software will let you streamline your finances and feel like you have a better grasp on where your money is going. That’s a double bonus!
3. Take Your Budget With You
Jesse and his team over at YNAB have thought of everything…seriously. I don’t know this for sure, but they might have thought of a way to grow a money tree (Ok, that might be a stretch…but you might feel like it after using YNAB for awhile!).
The folks over at You Need A Budget have created a killer computer program, with equally awesome tablet and mobile phone apps. You can literally carry your entire budget with you in your pocket (that wouldn’t be real easy with 30 pages of budgets, debt snowball lists, and envelopes full of cash…).
This means no more saving receipts and spending an hour at the end of the day entering all of your transactions. I literally have my transactions entered between when I check out at the grocery store and when I get in my car in the parking lot. It is that easy!
4. Cloud App
I’ve gotta admit, I was a bit hesitant when YNAB recently rolled out their cloud app and subscription based product…but I love it!
My budget updates seamlessly between my computer, phone and iPad. and one of the coolest things is that Jesse and his team are constantly updating the app and adding awesome features…and because it’s cloud-based, it’s always up to date…no more waiting for the new version to come out to get new features!
It’s like Christmas every time I pull up the app and see this little box:
5. The YNAB Team Will Have You Up and Running In No Time
First off, the You Need A Budget software is easy to use. They have seriously thought of everything. You can tell that this is software that is used day to day by those who create and design it. YNAB just transferred over to a cloud-based app that updates frequently and syncs seamlessly (without using Dropbox, like YNAB 4 did…) There were 4 versions prior to the New YNAB…I never used versions 1-3, but my experience with version 4 and now with the New YNAB tells me that they have implemented feedback from users to make this software as intuitive as possible.
Setting up a new budget is a 5 minute process, tops!
The best part of YNAB is the support team that Jesse has put together. They have several education specialists on staff and they put on live webinars almost daily to help you implement the You Need A Budget system quickly and the right way.
I have a lot of respect for Jesse Mecham. I’ve never met the guy (though I would love to at sometime…Jesse, if you read this, let’s grab a bite next time we find ourselves in the same area code!), but I’ve been extremely impressed with how focused he and the YNAB team are not just selling their budgeting software, but in teaching and educating their customer to change their financial future for the better.
What Are The Downsides to You Need A Budget?
1. You Have To Have a Computer
One of the downsides to YNAB is the fact that you have to have a computer to make it work. The whole software program revolves around the computer program.
This might not seem like a big deal, but I was talking to a friend who was interested in purchasing You Need A Budget. Things went well until I explained that you needed to have a computer for it to work. This caused her to pause.
So if you are still in the Stone Age, you’ll just have to keep using your ledger book and handwriting your budget (I think my grandma is still doing that… yikes! No thanks!)
Seriously, if you’ve been on the fence about getting a computer, I think YNAB is just the excuse you’ve been waiting for! 😉
2. This is a Different Budgeting Methodology

This is a new budgeting methodology. I’ll admit it took me a little while to figure out this new way of budgeting. If you are used to just listing out all of your monthly bills and then trying to make the money coming in magically stretch to cover all of those bills, you’ll have to rethink the way you approach budgeting.
If you are not willing to have an open mind and take the time to understand and implement Jesse Mecham’s You Need A Budget System, don’t even buy it.
Seriously. If you aren’t going to take the time to learn the system, it’ll just collect proverbial dust on your computer desktop.
Who Is YNAB For (And Who Is It Not For)?
You Need A Budget Software is For You if…
- You aren’t where you want to be financially. Let’s face it. If you are looking for budgeting software it’s because you want to be in a better financial position. YNAB will give you the tools to do it.
- You’ve tried (and failed) at several other budgeting solutions. You Need A Budget is a breathe of fresh air in the budget software. For me, it’s a budgeting approach that has worked when several others have failed. I think it might be the same for you.
- You want to spend less time budgeting. As I said above, YNAB makes budgeting easy and mobile. Being able to take your budget with you everwhere…but you won’t need to be glued to your budget.
- You are in a good financial position, but you want a good, flexible solution. Regardless of your financial position, this software can help you improve it and achieve your goals.
You Need A Budget Software is NOT For You if…
- You are unwilling to learn. This is a different budgeting system than many of the popular budgeting programs. If you can’t (or won’t) devote a few hours to learning this system, it is not for you.
- You are looking for a magic bullet. While YNAB is absolutely amazing (in my opinion…), it is not a magic bullet. You can’t just download the software and magically add a few zeros to your budget.
- You prefer pen and paper. Let’s be honest. If you prefer to do your budget with pen and paper, this is not the system for you…to be honest, the only system that is right is a ledger book!
